Tanzania has built a broad digital-payment ecosystem around mobile money, banks and increasingly interoperable payment infrastructure. The Tanzania Instant Payment System (TIPS) connects participating banks and non-bank digital financial-service providers for real-time payments, while TANQR provides a standardized QR framework for merchant payments. The Bank of Tanzania reported that by 2025, 27 financial-service providers had been onboarded to TANQR, up from 17 the previous year. For travelers, the key question remains access. A local mobile-money or QR ecosystem may be highly developed while still being built around domestic financial accounts. Ownly Pay is designed to connect supported digital assets with supported local payment infrastructure where available.

02 Find a supported local payment flow
03 Review and authorize
Tanzania is building interoperability into everyday payments
Tanzania’s payment infrastructure increasingly connects banks, mobile-money providers and merchant-payment systems. TIPS was created to improve real-time interoperability between financial-service providers, while TANQR aims to make QR merchant acceptance work across different networks. This creates a stronger digital-payment environment for local users, but travelers still need a compatible way into that infrastructure. Ownly Pay is designed to provide that connection for supported payments.

Your wallet remains digital. The merchant remains local.
Pay in three steps
01
Prepare your digital balance
Keep supported stablecoins in your Ownly wallet before making local payments.
02
Choose a supported payment method
At the merchant, look for a supported local QR or payment flow. Check the amount shown in Tanzanian shillings.
03
Review and confirm
Verify the merchant and transaction information, then authorize the payment. Where supported, Ownly Pay coordinates the connection with the local payment infrastructure.
Tanzania is digital — but cash is still important
Despite the growth of mobile money and instant payments, the Bank of Tanzania continues to describe cash as the country’s most widely used payment instrument. That makes a mixed approach sensible: use supported digital payments when they are available and keep some Tanzanian shillings for markets, smaller businesses, transport and other cash-oriented situations.
